Office lighting upgrades in Edmonton: fluorescent to LED conversions, occupancy and daylight controls, and fixes for glare, flicker and dark spots.

Why offices upgrade their lighting

Many Edmonton offices still run fluorescent tubes that hum, flicker and need regular relamping. LED fixtures use less power for the same light, last much longer and give better colour. When you add sensors and dimming, lights also stop burning in empty rooms overnight.

Comfort matters too. Poor lighting causes glare on screens, dark corners and headaches. A good upgrade fixes the light where people work, not just the fixture count.

Moving from fluorescent to LED cuts lighting energy, and adding controls typically cuts it further.

Retrofit kit or new fixture?

There are two main routes. Each has its place:

OptionGood forWatch for
LED retrofit kitSound existing housings, tight budgets, quick swapKit must be certified for use in that fixture
New LED fixtureOld or damaged housings, layout changes, better opticsMore labour and ceiling work
Direct-wire LED tubeRemoving the ballast as a failure pointFixture must be relabelled for the change

Any modification to an existing fixture must use certified components and be done by a licensed electrician. We will tell you honestly which route fits your ceiling and budget.

Controls that save energy without annoying staff

Controls are where much of the saving comes from, but badly set controls frustrate people. We place and tune them so lights come on when needed and stay on while people are working.

  • Occupancy or vacancy sensors in washrooms, meeting rooms and storage.
  • Daylight sensors that dim fixtures near windows, which Edmonton's long summer days make worthwhile.
  • Dimmers and scenes in boardrooms for presentations.
  • Time schedules for open areas and corridors.

Energy codes may require certain controls when lighting is replaced. What applies depends on the scope of the work, and we check it before we quote.

What affects the cost

Light quality is part of the decision too. We look at colour temperature, how well colours render, and glare ratings, not just brightness. A warmer white may suit a reception area, while a cooler, even light often works better over desks and in warehouses. We can mock up a few fixtures in one area so you can see the difference before committing to the whole floor.

We price each upgrade from a walk-through rather than a fixture count alone. Key factors are the number and type of fixtures, ceiling height and access, whether controls are added, after-hours scheduling, and disposal of old lamps and ballasts. Utility or government incentive programs come and go, so ask us to check what is currently available when we quote.

TipPlan it with other work

If you are already planning a tenant improvement, doing the lighting at the same time saves a second round of ceiling work.

Signs your office lighting is due

Not sure an upgrade is worth it yet? These are the signs we see most often in older Edmonton offices:

  • Tubes that flicker, hum or take a moment to start on cold mornings.
  • Mismatched colours from years of replacing lamps one at a time.
  • Lights left on all night and all weekend in empty rooms.
  • Staff complaining about glare on screens or dark desks.
  • Ballasts failing often enough that maintenance is a regular cost.

Any one of these is a reason to at least get an assessment. We will tell you what an upgrade could change and what it would involve, and you decide whether the timing is right. Combining an upgrade with your regular commercial maintenance plan can also spread the work out.

Questions we hear

Will LED lighting flicker?

Quality LED fixtures with good drivers should not visibly flicker. We use fixtures and dimmers that are rated to work together.

Can you upgrade while we are working?

Yes, but most offices prefer evenings or weekends. We can do one area at a time so the rest of the office stays usable.

Do LED fixtures work in a cold warehouse?

Yes, LEDs generally perform well in the cold, unlike some fluorescent lamps. We check the fixture rating for unheated spaces.

Do you handle the old tubes?

Yes. Fluorescent lamps contain mercury and need proper recycling. We take care of it.

How this job runs

What to expect

  1. Assess

We walk the space, count and type the fixtures, note problem areas and ask how rooms are used through the day.

  2. Recommend

You get options, such as retrofit kits versus new fixtures and which controls to add, with what drives the cost of each.

  3. Install

We replace fixtures area by area, often after hours, and recycle old lamps and ballasts.

  4. Tune and report

We set sensor timeouts and dimming levels, check emergency lighting, and post a report with what was installed.
