Lighting services in Edmonton: LED retrofits, outdoor and security lighting, landscape lighting and emergency and exit lighting for homes and businesses.

Good lighting changes how a space works

Lighting is one of the most noticeable parts of any electrical system. It affects how safe a parking lot feels at 5 pm in December, how a store shows its products, how comfortable an office is, and how welcoming a home looks from the street.

Alberta Electrical designs and installs lighting for homes, businesses and industrial sites across Edmonton. We think about where light is needed, how it is controlled, how much energy it uses and how it will hold up through an Alberta winter.

Ambient, task and accent lighting each do a different job, and controlling them separately makes a room more flexible.

Our lighting services

  • LED retrofits: replacing fluorescent, metal halide and older fixtures with efficient LED, inside and out.
  • Outdoor and security lighting: wall packs, pole lights, motion sensors and photocells for homes, lots and yards.
  • Landscape lighting: path, garden, tree and facade lighting that looks good and stands up to the weather.
  • Emergency and exit lighting: exit signs, battery units and remote heads, installed and tested for code compliance.

Built for Edmonton conditions

Exterior lighting here faces temperatures from the mid-30s down to -30 C or colder, freeze-thaw cycles, snow loads and long dark winter evenings. We choose fixtures rated for cold starts and wet locations, seal penetrations properly and use photocells and timers that keep working as daylight hours swing from about seven hours in December to over seventeen in June.

LED fixtures generally do well in the cold, which is one reason they have replaced older lamp types that struggled to start in a deep freeze.

Snow and ice also play a part. Fixtures mounted under eaves can get buried in icicles, and pole lights in parking lots take hits from snow-clearing equipment. We plan mounting heights, locations and protection with Edmonton winters in mind.

Controls make the difference

The best lighting is on when you need it and off when you do not. We install and set up:

  • Dimmers matched to the LED fixtures they control.
  • Occupancy and vacancy sensors for rooms that are used on and off.
  • Photocells and astronomical timers for exterior lighting.
  • Motion sensors for security lighting.
  • Scene and zone control for restaurants, boardrooms and retail.
TipMatch dimmers and fixtures

Many flicker and buzz complaints come from dimmers that are not compatible with the LED fixture or lamp. We check compatibility when we spec the job.

Cost and permits

Lighting cost depends on the number and type of fixtures, mounting height, access equipment needed, controls, and whether new circuits or poles are required. Exterior and parking lot work can involve trenching and bases, which adds to the scope.

We also think about maintenance. A fixture in a 9 metre warehouse ceiling or over a stairwell is expensive to reach, so long-life LED products and good access planning pay off over the years. Where it makes sense, we group fixtures so a lift visit can service several at once.

New lighting circuits and many fixture installations need an electrical permit, which we handle. In Edmonton the City issues it; elsewhere it depends on your municipality. Every job carries our 100% satisfaction guarantee.

Questions we hear

Can you supply the fixtures, or do I buy them?

Either. We can supply fixtures suited to the job, or install ones you have chosen if they are certified for use in Canada.

Why do my LED lights flicker?

Usually a dimmer that is not compatible with the LED, a failing driver or a loose connection. We can find and fix the cause.

Do outdoor lights work at -30 C?

Fixtures rated for cold temperatures do. We pick fixtures and controls suited to Edmonton winters.

How this job runs

What to expect

  1. Assess

We look at the space, how it is used and what is not working with the current lighting.

  2. Design and quote

We propose fixtures, layout and controls, and explain what drives the cost.

  3. Install

We install fixtures and controls, often after hours for businesses, and recycle old lamps.

  4. Set up and hand over

We aim and adjust fixtures, set controls and timers, and show you how everything works.
