Residential electrical
Safe, tidy electrical work for Edmonton homes, from one circuit to a full rewire.
Residential electrical services in Edmonton: basement developments, garage and workshop wiring, whole-home rewiring and electrical inspections by licensed electricians.
Electrical work for your home
Your home's electrical system works quietly in the background until you want to finish the basement, set up a shop in the garage, or you notice a breaker that keeps tripping. Alberta Electrical's licensed journeyperson electricians help Edmonton homeowners with projects big and small, and we treat your home the way we would want ours treated: boots off or covered, mess cleaned up, and everything explained in plain language.
Edmonton's housing stock is varied. Some neighbourhoods have early 1900s homes with knob-and-tube wiring. Many 1960s and 1970s bungalows have 60 or 100 amp services and, in some cases, aluminium branch wiring. Newer homes may simply need more capacity for an EV charger, heat pump or hot tub. We know what to look for in each.
Our residential services
Most of our home work falls into four areas:
- Basement renovations: planning and wiring a basement development, from bedrooms and bathrooms to a home theatre.
- Garage and workshop wiring: lighting, receptacles, 240 V tool circuits and feeds to detached garages.
- Whole-home rewiring: replacing knob-and-tube, ungrounded or damaged wiring in older homes.
- Home electrical inspections: a thorough check of your system before you buy, sell, renovate or insure.
We also handle panel replacements and service upgrades, lighting, and wiring for heating, EV chargers and solar.
Older homes and what to watch for
Older wiring is not automatically dangerous, but it was designed for far less load than a modern household uses, and much of it has been modified over the decades. Insurers often ask about knob-and-tube and aluminium wiring, and some will not cover a home until it is assessed or replaced.
Signs worth a call include warm or discoloured cover plates, flickering lights, a burning smell, buzzing at switches or receptacles, and breakers or fuses that trip often.
If you smell burning plastic or see smoke from a receptacle or panel, leave the house and call 911. For urgent electrical problems that are not a fire, call our 24/7 line at 1 (800) 716-8955.
Permits and peace of mind
Most electrical work in a home needs a permit. Inside Edmonton, permits come from the City, which also sends the inspector. Outside city limits, the permit authority depends on where you live. We apply for the permit, book the inspection and give you the paperwork at the end, which matters when you sell or make an insurance claim.
Every job is covered by our 100% satisfaction guarantee, and you can follow your job's progress and records through our online job management system.
If you are not sure whether a job needs a permit, ask us. Unpermitted work can cause problems with insurance claims and home sales, and it is much easier to do it right the first time.
Common home projects we handle
Beyond the four main services, homeowners call us for all sorts of everyday jobs:
- Adding circuits for a kitchen renovation, microwave or dishwasher.
- Installing ceiling fans, pot lights and under-cabinet lighting.
- Hot tub and pool equipment connections.
- Exterior receptacles for block heaters and holiday lights.
- Replacing two-prong receptacles with grounded or GFCI-protected ones.
- Tracking down a circuit that keeps tripping.
No job is too small to ask about. If it is something we would not recommend, we will tell you why.
Questions we hear
Do I need a permit for electrical work?
Most electrical work in a home does, including new circuits, panel changes and basement developments. Simple like-for-like swaps may not. We check and handle the permit for you.
Can you work on knob-and-tube wiring?
Yes. We assess it, advise whether it can stay for now or should be replaced, and can rewire some or all of the house.
Do you offer emergency service?
Yes. Our 24/7 line is 1 (800) 716-8955. For fire or smoke, call 911 first.
Will you clean up after the job?
Yes. We protect floors, keep dust down where we cut openings, and leave the work area clean.
