LED retrofits

Replace old fluorescent and HID lighting with efficient, low-maintenance LED.

CommercialIndustrialResidential

LED lighting retrofits in Edmonton for offices, warehouses, shops, parking lots and homes: fixture and kit options, controls, recycling of old lamps and permits.

Why switch to LED

Older lighting technologies, fluorescent tubes, metal halide and high-pressure sodium, are being phased out across the industry. They use more power, need regular lamp and ballast replacement, and some struggle to start in the cold.

LED fixtures use less energy for the same light, last far longer, start instantly at -30 C and work well with sensors and dimming. For a warehouse with high ceilings, fewer trips up a lift to change lamps is a real saving in itself.

Replacing metal halide high-bays with LED gives instant, more even light and allows sensors to dim empty aisles.

Retrofit options

There is more than one way to upgrade. The right choice depends on the age and condition of your fixtures, the ceiling, the budget and how long you plan to stay.

Fluorescent fixtures can be converted with plug-and-play tubes, ballast-bypass tubes, or retrofit kits and new fixtures.

Converting fixtures to bypass the ballast or install kits changes how the fixture is wired. It should be done by a licensed electrician with certified parts.

Where LED retrofits pay off most

  • Warehouses and shops with high-bay fixtures running long hours.
  • Parking lots and building exteriors on all night.
  • Offices with rows of fluorescent troffers, see office lighting upgrades.
  • Retail stores where better colour helps sell products.
  • Cold storage and unheated buildings where older lamps struggle.

Long operating hours are the biggest factor. A fixture that runs 24 hours a day pays back far faster than one in a storage room used an hour a week.

Planning the work

We survey your space, count and type the fixtures, measure light levels where useful, and note ceiling heights and access. Then we recommend an approach area by area. Some clients do the whole building at once; others phase it over a few budget cycles.

Most commercial retrofits are done after hours or in sections so the business keeps running. We bring lifts where needed, handle disposal of fluorescent lamps, which contain mercury, and recycle ballasts and fixtures.

Cost depends on the number and type of fixtures, mounting height and access, whether you choose tubes, kits or new fixtures, controls, and after-hours work. Incentive programs change over time, so ask us to check what is currently available.

Adding controls

A retrofit is the ideal time to add controls. LEDs handle frequent switching and dimming far better than HID lamps, which need to cool down before restarting. Occupancy sensors in aisles, daylight sensors near windows and skylights, and timers for exterior lighting can cut energy use well beyond the fixture swap alone.

We set sensitivity and timeouts so the lights respond the way your people work, and show your team how to adjust them.

For homes, a retrofit can be as simple as swapping screw-in bulbs, which you can do yourself. Converting old fluorescent fixtures in a basement or garage, replacing pot lights, or adding dimmers that work properly with LED is where an electrician helps. We check that new fixtures are rated for insulation contact and damp locations where needed.

Questions we hear

Will LED light look harsh?

It does not have to. LED comes in different colour temperatures, from warm to cool. We help you pick one that suits the space.

Can I just buy LED tubes and swap them myself?

Plug-and-play tubes are designed to work with existing ballasts, but compatibility varies. Anything that changes the fixture wiring should be done by a licensed electrician.

How long do LED fixtures last?

Much longer than fluorescent or HID lamps, though actual life depends on the product, heat and hours of use. We supply quality fixtures with clear manufacturer ratings.

How this job runs

What to expect

  1. Survey

We count and type fixtures, check access and hours of use, and ask about problem areas.

  2. Recommend

We present options for each area with what drives the cost and the expected benefits.

  3. Retrofit

We install in phases or after hours, and recycle old lamps and ballasts.

  4. Commission

We set up sensors and controls, verify operation and post a summary to our online system.
